Summer is officially on it’s way! It begins with the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere occurring on Tuesday, June 20th, 2017. So what’s the deal about summer solstice and why is there so much talk about it? 

Well it’s an incredibly powerful time, energetically speaking. Summer solstice is the longest day of the year and is when there is the most light, sun energy, available to us for use. From an astrological perspective the sun (also known as a luminary and a star) is that vital life force energy that gives us the strength and the will to succeed and achieve our dreams, our destiny, our life purpose. It represents the Self, your personality, your ego, and what makes you unique. It’s your identity and how you face the world. That’s why most people look at their sun sign horoscopes. It’s a very powerful, burning and forceful energy in your chart and therefore has a lot of influence in how you interact with this world.

There are many ancient civilizations that have celebrated this time and aligned their sacred sites with this day. For example, the head of the Sphinx at Great Pyramids of Egypt aligns with the summer solstice as does Stonehenge in the UK.

Historically, summer solstice has been a time to celebrate the return of the light from the darkness. It’s a blissful time and the week leading up to this epic event is a great time to spend some time working on ourselves because the energy of the sun (the energy of the Self) is at it’s most powerful. 

Yogi Bhajan, who brought Kundalini Yoga to the west, said that summer solstice is a time to break your patterns - “You are here to go through certain changes. And you cannot live intellectually all your life. You have to live by the power of your soul.” “Can we prove to ourselves that deep, deep in us we have the strength and are capable to do anything we want to do?”

He emphasized the importance of Kundalini summer solstice even more so by saying on this day “We want to lay the foundations of the new future. That is the purpose of us being here this day: to prove to ourselves that we have the spirit to survive through every obstacle.”

We work with this energy to bring both freedom and flexibility into our lives with mantra, dance, kundalini yoga and healing gong bath. Through dance and yoga we consciously direct prana, shifting blocks in our energy bodies, opening up to innate healing – mentally, emotionally and physically, rooting us in abundant joy and health. We can elevate our vibration, clear out some of the junk we carry around, and lay a new foundation for the year to come.

We’d recommend the doing the following leading up to and on the summer solstice:

1. Meditate and Yoga: Take a least 3-5 minutes to meditate every morning (always) but especially during this week leading up to the summer solstice. We are challenging everyone to do at least 4 Kundalini Yoga Classes this week. Whether it's the classes from Intro to Kundalini Collection, Raise Your Vibration Challenge, or RISE UP, commit, schedule it in your calendar and get them in! If you are in LA come practice with Britt in person at RA MA Institute, Tuesdays at 12:30p (except for 6.20 when we will be at Solstice). Major bonus for you if you can do it every day and during sadhana hours 4-6am. 

2. Get Clear: It’s a perfect time to move through blocks that are getting in your way and get clear with yourself by writing out what old patterns you are looking to break during this time. Meditate on this leading up to the solstice.

3. Soak up the Sun: Get outside this upcoming week and channel the sun energy through your body, feel it’s healing and energizing light surround all your organs.

4. Celebrate: Throw a summer solstice party or throw your own personal party to celebrate the power of the sun!

Yogi Bhajan started the annual Kundalini Summer Solstice Sadhana Celebration that’s still held each year in the high desert mountains of New Mexico. Run by his foundation, 3HO, it’s a 9-day spiritual gathering based on the teachings of Yogi Bhajan. It includes Kundalini Yoga workshops, 3 days of White Tantric Yoga, Morning Sadhanas, and Live Kirtan. We’ll be attending this year and will be sharing our experience with you all!
